CAR OF THE WEEK – 2008 PORSCHE 911 GT2 3.6 (997) MANUAL

PORSCHE’S PURE POWERHOUSE

Every now and again Porsche let their motorsport technicians unleash their creative side and put their vastly experienced heads together to create an even more extreme version of the already impressive 911 range. What starts with the GT3 and GT3 RS motorsport inspired road going track focused versions, becomes merely a hint of the potential of what is possible when they really exploit the possibilities, resulting in the 911 GT2.

The introduction of the GT2 is a holy grail for Porsche enthusiasts and a chance to experience what the latest 911 is really capable of when it is turned all the way up to 11. In 2007 Porsche unveiled their latest 997 GT2 using the latest technology and racing knowledge hewn from decades of success on the track. A blend of enhanced 911 Turbo in the engine department and GT3/GT3 RS in the chassis, the GT2 is the perfect combination to create the ultimate iteration.

Rear wheel drive, a 6-speed manual gearbox, semi-slick tyres, 0-62mph in 3.7 seconds, a top speed of over 200mph and 532bhp from the twin turbo 3.6 flat six engine. Performance figures that reportedly even Porsche themselves were surprised at how much power that engine could create when turned all the way up. The result is a raw driving experience, a chance to experience the un-dampened noise, the informative feel of every bump and every apex hit with precise turn in and feel from the racing steering wheel.

The 997 GT2 is an impressive 145kg lighter than the 997 Turbo thanks to the lack of 4WD system, a glass-reinforced plastic engine cover, titanium exhaust system and Porsche Carbon Ceramic Brakes (PCCB) as standard. Out goes the four-wheel drive system, a significant amount of creature comforts and a lot of the restricting electronic aids, to be replaced by the thrill of unhinged power and decades of racing pedigree and engineering at its finest.

On the road, the GT2 remains surprisingly composed and more refined than you would expect. The last generation GT2 quickly earned the nickname ‘The Widowmaker’ and whilst the 997 generation certainly has the performance to create the same fear, the reality is that the developed GT3 chassis performs just as well to keep up with the increase in power. The demand for the pinnacle of Porsche engineering for each version of 911 means that the GT2 is almost assured future classic car status.
