Car Of The Week – Ferrari 488 GTB 70th Anniversary

Many car manufacturers have a long and impressive history. But none more so than Ferrari. The racing team Scuderia Ferrari was first founded in 1929 so Enzo could race in Alfa Romeos, but the company Ferrari didn’t exist until nearly twenty years later-in 1947.

It starts with a car you might not have heard of- the Ferrari 195 Inter Touring Coupe, produced in the 1950’s. At the time, Touring was one of a select few external designers, alongside Ghia, Ghia Aigle and Vignale, to build numerous different versions of the 195 Inter.

The 195 Inter at the time was a more powerful version of the 195 S, and formed the basis of some successful GT (Grand Tourer) racing cars. The 195 was supposedly built to be Ferrari’s gateway drug- clients who weren’t used to the extreme performance that Enzo offered could drive the 195 Inter, which had purposefully been made easier to drive.

As some of you may have noticed however, the Ferrari in the photos was not made in the 1950s. It was produced in 2017 as a 1 of 1, to commemorate Ferrari’s 70th Anniversary (1947-2017). In honour of 70 years of the prancing horse, Ferrari built 350 Tailor Made cars. 70 of these were 488 GTBs, and each is dedicated to one of Ferrari’s most significant cars throughout its 70 years.

More specifically, this 488 GTB was the only one ever made to commemorate the 195 Inter Touring Coupe. As a result, it has one of the most unique spec plaques we’ve ever seen. It even forgoes the usual carbon fibre items in favour of a more tasteful, retro vibe.

The unique spec starts on the outside, with Extra-Range Tri-Coat paintwork in Grigio Ingrid. Don’t be misled by the Grigio in the name, though – this is not a grey car, and is a delightfully retro champagne gold. Subtle touches to the exterior include Dreamline in Argento Nurburgring to the window surrounds and the 70th anniversary logos.

Inside, the Tailor Made spec really shows through, with Cognac and Black leather, with Kvadrat Field Fabric accents to the seat centres and even to the wrist rest. Interior trim elements on the steering wheel and dash are also colour-matched to the exterior
