Car Of The Week – Ferrari 812 SuperfastHow fast is superfast? For the numbers fetishists, the top speed is 211mph, with 0-62mph in 2,9sec and 0-125mph in only 7,9sec. Ferrari went quite literal with the 812 Superfast. Indeed, this is an 800-horsepower V12 coupe that goes super (freaking) fast. Of course, lots of cars go super fast. But very few are so fast they make you feel 20 years younger.
The most impressive feat is how composed it is, even over some genuinely awful surfaces. The best setting is Sport (selected as usual by the Manettinoswitch on the steering wheel) to get sharper responses from the engine and gearbox, together with the excellent “bumpy road” suspension setting that provides a degree of suspension compliance for comfort with rapid responses.
As if the chassis doesn’t make you feel heroic enough, the engine management software delivers a perfectly executed blip during downchanges. And that’s the genius of the 812 Superfast, the way that all the systems integrate seamlessly to flatter drivers of all abilities while permitting full exploitation of the prodigious power in a series of carefully managed steps. At no point do you feel that it will leave you high and dry.
The mega-sharp steering makes it feel like a car with a foot shorter wheelbase than it’s got, and at least a few hundred pounds lighter. The 812 Superfast is an automotive marvel, especially in our example’s extraordinary Blu Pozzi colour and the Blu Medio Leather interior with contrasting Azzurro Santorini accents.
It’s also practically as new, covering just 8,600 miles on the clock, and carries an immense amount of carbon and optional extras; you genuinely couldn’t ask for more. And all that while, it’s becoming increasingly likely with each passing year that its naturally aspirated V12 engine will not last long in this world. We’d be deficient in our beliefs if we didn’t enjoy it as much as possible while it lasts.
