If you’re going to attempt to create a brand new sector, why not create something ground-breaking and revolutionary. Starting with the performance and handling characteristics of some of the worlds most impressive supercars, adding the luxuriousness and refinement produced by master craftsmen and finishing with the off-road capability of a practical SUV to create one unique concept is no mean feat. Lamborghini, however, have managed to create something truly remarkable in the Urus.

Firstly, being Lamborghini, they started out by aiming to create the fastest of all the SUV’s and formed a new ‘super’ sports utility vehicle niche. With a 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8 engine, Lamborghini’s very first turbocharged engine, producing 650bhp and 850nm of torque, the Urus has a 0-62mph time of just 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 190mph. Figures that match all but the fastest supercars in a car that can comfortably seat the whole family and their luggage as well as being equipped to tackle challenging terrain. But strangely it’s not the speed that impresses most with the Urus, it’s the fact that it feels like nothing else.

The handling is sports car sharp, the noise and crackles from the exhaust are very addictive and the comfort is that of the finest luxury vehicles. You don’t just get in and drive, you comfortably slide into the sports seats equipped with the finest of Italian leather, surrounded by a cutting edge designed interior and finely-honed woods, metals or carbon fibre. Sure, flipping the fighter jet style switch to uncover the starter button unleashes the expected symphony of engine noise from the quad exhausts, but for those wanting to hear an actual symphony, the Bang & Olufsen 3D audio system with 1700W and 21 speakers is more than enough to cocoon you in your own orchestral experience. The luxury and refinement feels very Bentley-esque, handily another company in the VW Group, and something even beyond most supercars.

Accompanying the craftsmanship is the technology, and not just the visible array of gadgets and assistances but ones that are hidden away in the cars engineering and ones that make a real difference. With a steel, carbon fibre and aluminium construction the Urus weighs little more than a luxury saloon, another reason for the sharp handling and acceleration. Combine this with the variable 4-wheel steering, opposite directions to aid slow speed manoeuvrability and same direction steer to aid high speed stability, the largest ceramic brakes ever fitted to a production car at 440mm (front discs), sophisticated central locking differential four wheel drive system, active torque vectoring via a rear differential, adaptive air suspension, active dampers; the list goes on and on.

Lamborghini really seem to have pulled off the impossible and produced not just a perfect all-rounder, but a car that absolutely excels in every area it is faced with. A car that is both supercar fast, sumptuously luxurious and a more than capable off-roader, and yet seems to be able to do all three without one affecting the other. They may have set out to create the world’s first super-SUV, but at the same time produced the perfect car for every occasion and any situation.
