Car Of The Week – Porsche 911 Carrera GTS 992.2992.2. If you stopped and asked someone on the street, chances are this collection of numbers would mean little to nothing to them. If you said the same thing to a car enthusiast however, they’d tell you what it meant: a new 911. It’s much more than that; the 992.2 Carrera GTS is the first hybrid 911 ever.
Electrification fees like a touchy subject for car enthusiasts. For people whose veins run with petrol instead of blood, it’s the antichrist, and especially online, it seems you have to choose between loving EVs or combustion engines. You can’t be seen to like both. However, it seems Porsche has found a way to.
Year: 24/74
Mileage: 290
Colour: Vanadium Grey
Interior: Full Black leather with contrast Crayon stitching.
The latest Carrera GTS is a hybrid, involving an all-new 3.6-litre engine mated to an eight-speed PDK, which has an electric motor incorporated into it. Technology that Porsche is calling ‘T-hybrid’. More electricity can be found in the exhaust fan of the turbo, giving the car greater control of boost pressure, all but eliminating any turbo lag. The GTS’s battery stores all this energy in a super small and compact 400-volt item, which can also recuperate energy “for new, unforgettable acceleration processes” (according to Porsche).
Combine both the electric motor and the 3.6-litre flat six, and there’s 541bhp and 450lb ft of torque, which is up massively from its predecessor, giving the Carrera GTS Turbo S-like pace and making this the quickest 911 with the word Carrera on the rear of the car, ever, dashing from 0 to 62mpg in three seconds flat. It’s brutal, relentless acceleration, with an all but instant response.
To summarize, a few other changes. No twisty knob for the ignition-instead, it’s a simple push to start. The front bumper is full of fins now, and there are a couple of new lines just below the headlights. The rear bumper is also very slightly different, and there’s a new black piece of trim running all the way across the bottom of the rear lights. All evolutionary changes, sure, but this is a 911 that feels, for the first time in a while, like quite a big change. Whether it’s an upgrade or not, that’s up to you to decide.
