Car Of The Week – Porsche 911 GT3 RS (992)

It’s normal nowadays not having the patience to wait till the end. So, we’ll start with the finish: The 992 GT3 RS, like every other Porsche 911 GT3 RS of the past, is the closest you can get to a race car until a race car pulls up.

It’s not pretending or playing dress-up, and it’s genuinely fast. It offers the sensations of what you might get from a race car, but without giving up any of the real conveniences of a road-legal one.

If you were to read Porsche’s press release exclusively, you wouldn’t know that as the only things mentioned are lap times, how much motorsport technology they could cram in there, and all the conveniences that get thrown out (such as the boot) in service of this. That’s not the case, though, when it comes to driving. You can adjust everything on the GT3 RS, from the traction and stability control (or lack thereof) to how the torque vectoring sends power to how the differential locks up and opens. You can adjust the compression and rebound of the shocks independently and how the active aero behaves.

And apparently, some combination of settings makes the RS ride softer than the standard GT3; yes, for real.

What we can say about the GT3 RS is that it delivers on its promise of being the most aggressive 911 ever built, one perfectly suited for track work, while being friendly and approachable by a driver who doesn’t want to go full-on racecar. It’s comfortable even for very tall, overweight drivers, familiar to anyone who’s spent time in a modern 911, and street legal should you wake up one morning and decide to hit B-roads rather than the racetrack. Is it the ultimate Porsche? Yes. Even though Porsche makes 29 variants of this one car, leaving room for specialisation. Do you want boot space? Well, get a GT3 instead.
