Lamborghini of yesteryear were known for their flamboyant styling, loud brash power and exotic looks and paint colours. The wings were bigger, air intakes more gaping and exhausts larger and louder than anyone else. Yet the cars themselves were never that great to drive. There was a sense that the driving, or even driving position, was something of an afterthought that was to be put up with rather than enjoyed. Since the sensible heads at Audi took over the company in 1998 many people felt Lamborghini had lost a bit of their craziness and along with it a bit of the soul of the company.
Their first all new models, the Murcielago and Gallardo, although still power crazy and very accomplished cars, were often criticised for being a bit too safe and conservative, especially with the styling and when compared to the flamboyance of a Diablo, Countach or Miura. Lamborghini’s replacement for the ageing Murcielago came in the form of the Aventador. More power, more aggressive styling and more like Lamborghini of old, but for many, still not far enough.
As with historic models of old though, the SV model is where the Lamborghini craziness runs deep, and the Aventador SV is certainly no exception. The Audi sensibleness continues but just enough to make sure the tyres have more than enough grip, the technology work the way it should and the car starts first time, every time. After that, the car is pure Lamborghini. The name ‘SV’ or ‘Super Veloce’ means super-fast, and with a 6.5 litre V12 engine producing 740bhp the Aventador SV is capable of 0-62mph in just 2.8 seconds and has a top speed of 217mph. It more than certainly lives up to its name.
The styling matches the power not-so-hidden beneath the aggressively styled bodywork with excessive amounts of carbon fibre to the bumpers, air intakes, engine cover, rear diffuser and a huge fixed rear spoiler, adjustable too if you are brave enough to tamper with it. With the extra trim the whole car looks lower, wider and even more missile-like than ever before, yet the additions generate real downforce to ensure the car feels sure-footed at whatever speed you dare to travel at. Even climbing in is an event thanks to the traditional scissor-doors that Lamborghini fans will rejoice at seeing.
Inside, although the car is so low and the windscreen is at such a low angle, the interior feels more spacious than you might expect. The abundance of technology may be straight from Audi but that just ensures that everything will work the way it should. Lashings of carbon fibre, the finest leather and Alcantara and contrasting hand stitching means the interior looks exactly the way a supercar should, special and a bit of an occasion. The flip up cover to the starter button, just like a fighter jet, ensures that starting the car feels like an event each and every time.
Lamborghini have produced the Aventador SV with enough of the lunacy of old with the reassurance that Audi have made sure it is built correctly and reliably. Gone are the days when a Lamborghini was merely jaw-dropping to look at yet a bit of a nightmare to attempt to drive, and now perform enough to match those outlandish looks. The SV is a return to the poster cars of old by creating a futuristic supercar filled with the latest technology and breathtaking performance.
