The Ultimate Grand Tourer

The Bentley Continental GT has always been the quintessential Bentley. As mentioned last week with the Bentayga (see last weeks post here) the recipe for the perfect Bentley is a large, comfortable car, perfect for Grand Touring (hence the ‘GT’) and with powerful, yet refined engines usually in the form of a V12 or V8. The original Bentley Continental GT was the first under Volkswagen’s ownership and while some initially thought it was a dilution of the brand and just a chance to generate more sales, the resulting figures were due to the car’s brand image, quality and refinement more than anything else.

Following a successful first product, whether it is a car, a music album or even a consumer electronic is always a difficult task. Fans of the original are always going to be faithful to what they know, so trying to create something better in every way is always a challenge. The second generation of Continental was merely a slightly restyled version of the first model, slight styling tweaks here and there and a refreshed engine line up, but essentially a very similar car. For the third version it was time for a fresh look and an all new model to enhance the appeal of the ultimate Grand Tourer. A task that Bentley seemed to have taken head on and produced a car that really is better in every way.

The revised Continental GT is all new from the ground up and built using and incorporating the latest technology. With an extended wheelbase and thoroughly modern engines using high-and-low-pressure direct injection, variable displacement and stop start technology in the TSI engine. The GT is also the first production car to have an entire body side panel made using a ‘super formed’ process using gas-moulded heated panels rather than a stamp. The result is more precise lines, the possibility to do complex shapes and sharper creases, the kind of sophistication and attention to detail you’d expect from a Bentley. The new exterior styling is more aggressive and thoroughly modern yet retains the contemporary classic appearance that Bentley should.

The interior has been given a complete overhaul with even more sumptuous materials, a fully digital display and even more opportunity to personalise each aspect. Features such as the dashboard rotating display is an industry first and adds a sense of occasion to the cabin, whilst standard Apple CarPlay ensures that the technology feels familiar and up to date. The interior ambience is as you’d expect though, it may contain the latest technology and digital features, yet it is neatly displayed from behind luxurious sculpted woods and metals and the finest of turned aluminium and chrome switchgear. The blend of modern and traditional seems to combine perfectly and is very user friendly and intuitive. Just what you’d expect for a relaxing atmosphere and effortless driving experience.
