When Mercedes Benz created the AMG GT they made no bones about the fact they were targeting the go-to sports car king; the Porsche 911. The fellow Stuttgart manufacturer has ruled the roost for decades when it comes to performance cars that have the ability to also be used every day and be driven at ease no matter the distance. Their first all AMG creation was the SLS, which was their first foray in producing their own car from the ground up rather than tuning an existing Mercedes Benz model. The SLS was seen as a modern day muscle car and harked back to the original 300 SL of the 1960’s with its gullwing doors, sleek long bodystyle and endless bonnet.
This time however, they ditched the retro inspiration and took a more serious approach to proceedings, starting with the recruitment of someone who could definitely help them achieve their goal, Porsche’s former chassis development leader for the 911. Using the SLS as a starting point they began by lowering the car by over an inch, shortening the wheelbase, revising the geometry of the suspension and crucially ensuring the AMG GT shared the exact weight distribution that the 911 had, a 47:53 front-to-rear split. Don’t be fooled by that long bonnet either, the engine sits so far back that really the car is front-mid engined to ensure that handling is definitely a priority of the car.
AMG have managed to engineer as much of a 911 as they can in terms of handling and balance yet haven’t lost any of the AMG trademarks you would expect. It may be adept at setting lap times round a track, but the snug cabin definitely has a GT feel about it and is adorned with a plethora of switches, dials and controls to set the car up just the way you want to for whatever mood you are in. The 3 mode drive select controls, Comfort, Sport and Sport Plus, allow for customisation of the way the car is set up altering throttle response, steering feel and the plushness of the adaptive dampers.
The rumbling AMG trademark soundtrack is ever-present and the selectable exhaust means it can be made louder, barked through huge twin exhaust tailpipes, and as you sit more towards the back in this car the growls are closer than ever to your ears. The proven 4.0 litre Bi-Turbo V8 produces 503bhp and 649Nm of torque, more than plenty in a car that is 25kg less than a similar aged Porsche 911, another statistic that undoubtedly isn’t a coincidence. The AMG GT feels effortless in its performance and the handling and steering feel is assured, something not expected of a car that looks a lot bigger than its nimbleness suggests.
The AMG GT S Edition 1 takes that athleticism and performance ethos and takes it that bit further with more exclusive styling both inside and out as well as an abundance of additional features included too. The exterior of the car features revised front aerodynamics with a deeper front splitter and more prominent side skirts as well as a large fixed rear wing and Gloss Black 19/20” diamond turned wheels. The roof is now made from carbon fibre too for weight saving and to lower the centre of gravity and the car has the AMG Night Pack included with Gloss Black exterior trim to match the wheels and fixed spoiler.
Inside the Edition 1 receives AMG performance seats, AMG Edition 1 performance steering wheel, Black leather and Dinamica Microfibre interior trim with Red detailing, stitching and seatbelts, and a ‘Black Diamond’ centre console finish. It also comes with an abundance of features that are usually options for the AMG GT S to include a 640W Burmester surround sound system, AMG lane tracking package, Mirror package, Front and rear Parktronic with reverse camera assist and Traffic sign recognition.
Our 2015 Mercedes Benz AMG GTS Edition 1 is finished in Magnetite Black metallic with Black and Red Nappa leather and Dinamica microfibre interior with contrast Red stitching and seams. The car was previously supplied and maintained by ourselves and is offered in exceptional condition having covered just 13,850 miles.
