When the Porsche Cayenne arrived in 2002 many thought Porsche had sold their soul and produced a car so far removed from their heritage, with more thought about profit and units sold rather than the true essence of what makes a Porsche. With a look of the front of a 911 perched on a high riding SUV body and a huge gaping grille, initial impressions were not well received, especially amongst the loyal Porsche fandom.
Fast forward the best part of 2 decades and not only have the looks evolved to look refined and stylish, but Porsche’s Cayenne has always been widely regarded as the best handling of all the performance SUV’s on sale over that period. Whilst over 500 bhp in a large SUV might almost be commonplace these days, the refinement and engineering improvements that the Cayenne has received mean that it remains right up there with the very best. The latest third-generation Turbo is the lightest and fastest Cayenne they’ve ever made, and with 542 bhp from its 4.0 litre twin-turbo V8 engine it’s also the most powerful, accelerating this two-tonne powerhouse from 0-62 mph in just 3.9 seconds.
Equipping their largest car with the latest technology found across the Porsche range means that thanks to Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control, Rear axle steering, Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV), three chamber PASM air suspension, Sport Chrono package and a plethora of other advances, the latest Cayenne Turbo not only handles well for an SUV, it handles exceptionally, full stop.
The technological advances even extend to the way the car stops. A system called Porsche Surface Coated Brakes (PSCB), a worldwide first and standard on the Cayenne Turbo, use Tungsten Carbide, one of the hardest materials known to man after diamond, as a coating on the brake discs that makes them shine like a mirror. This, combined with specially developed brake pads, creates a braking system that on the road is as effective as carbon ceramic brakes, and are as effective at temperatures above 600°C as they are cold, yet are a third of the cost. Thanks to the smoothness of the discs, they also produce almost no brake dust under use, hence the calipers on the car being white in colour, the perfect way for Porsche to show this off. If that wasn’t enough, the active rear spoiler that constantly adjust depending on your speed, also raises under braking to create drag and act as an air brake. An air brake on an SUV!
The extent of engineering on the Cayenne is almost beyond belief, but they also understand their clientele. Transmission isn’t available in Porsche’s performance benchmark, the Porsche-Doppelkupplungsgetriebe, or PDK, instead it is equipped with an eight-speed torque converter as it is more suitable for off road driving and allows the Cayenne to tow up to 3.5 tonnes in weight. They know that many a Cayenne is used to tow horse boxes and do venture off road, so have made sure it is just as capable in this respect.
Inside, the Cayenne is a showcase of technology, with the same 12.3” HD touchscreen from the Panamera and HD digital screens either side of the analogue central dial to control everything from driving modes, off road modes, PCM satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay or the BOSE premium sound system. The possibilities for controlling every aspect of the interior and exterior driving are seemingly endless, with enough computing power to keep even the keenest technology fan more than happy.
