Much has been said about the financial troubles of Aston Martin over the years. From multiple changes of ownership, to bankruptcy, to near collapse of the company, the history of the brand has been chequered to say the least. These days, however, the company is making strides to make sure they are heading in the right direction and hopefully putting that unwelcome reputation behind them. In recent years, a return to the pinnacle of motorsport in Formula 1, a flotation on the stock market and an engine and technology deal with Mercedes AMG is certainly a step in the right direction.
Many feel the agreement with Mercedes AMG to supply engines and electronics to Aston Martin is Aston Martin selling their soul and going against the history and ethos of the famously British brand. But how many British brands are actually still British owned these days, and why not use proven technology and reduce development costs to ensure that your products can stay at the top of their game. The latest Aston Martin Vantage is the perfect example of how the Anglo-German tie-in works so effectively.
The previous generation Vantage had an incredible production span of almost 14 years but by the end it was well overdue a replacement. The latest Vantage started with a clean sheet of paper and resulted in a very bold and purposeful look to the smallest Aston in the range. Longer, wider and slightly taller than the previous generation and with a 30% more rigid chassis than the DB11, the Vantage divided opinions with its aggressive new look and oversized trademark DB grille. Leaving the soft ‘Grand Touring’ to be covered by the aforementioned DB11, the new Vantage meant business with their new sports car and it definitely shows in everything from the design to the interior, handling and performance.
Powered by the same 4.0 litre bi-turbo V8 as the AMG GT, and so many other AMG products, the engine produces 503bhp to propel the car from 0-62mph in an impressive 3.6 seconds and onward to a top speed of 195mph. The noise that burbles from the exhausts isn’t just the AMG rumble you’d expect, Aston Martin have ensured that their own signature tune is the one that gets played through the pipes. The lack of Comfort mode together with sharper steering, gearbox and electronic differential means that the Vantage also feels much more nimble than those wide rear arches would suggest.
On the inside, the driver sits low down and the window line is higher than before, but the driving position feels spot-on, the way a sports car should feel. The swathes of hand stitched leather and soft Alcantara make the interior a very nice place to sit, looking every bit as modern as the exterior. The controls for the infotainment may also be from Mercedes but that just means they work faultlessly every time.
There may be aspects of a Porsche 911 or Audi R8 that are done better or preferable to some people, but fans or previous owners of an Aston Martin will be more than amazed at how far the company has come. No longer are aspects of an Aston Martin considered good ‘for an Aston Martin’ but more than enough to hold their own amongst the finest sports cars on the road. Aston Martin have been bold with their latest Vantage and have more than pulled it off in every aspect.
