Porsche know that their 911 GT3 RS is considered a benchmark to which its on track performance will be compared to everything from sports cars and supercars, to hyper cars and even lightweight special edition cars. That is why they take its track capability so seriously. On the road at town speeds, for some it may be a bit noisy, ride harshly and sometimes take too long to change gear so it looks like you’re showing off to pedestrians, but that’s not the point. Lap times and handling characteristics are the point and that is the GT3 RS’s party piece.
To prove how serious Porsche take the GT3 RS’s on track performance you only have to take a look at the improved parts it is sporting. It has the wheels, tyres, seats, steering wheel and brakes from a 918 Spyder, the wide body from the 911 Turbo, for a wider track and improved air flow and feed to the engine, and that enormous spoiler helping to produce 80 percent of the downforce of their GT3 racing car. In fact it produces more downforce at 125mph than the previous generation did at 186mph, a full 345kg of it. The mad-looking vented front arches reduce the high pressure in the wheelarch, not only increasing front downforce but also allowing Porsche’s engineers to give the rear wing more angle to balance things out.
Then there are the carbon fibre reinforced plastic body panels; the bonnet, front wings, rear deck and rear spoiler, the polyurethane-carbonfibre polymer rear bumper and polycarbonate windows at the side and rear, then a further 1.1kg saving from the magnesium roof. It may all sound like a chemistry lesson on overload but all of this engineering lowers the centre of gravity on the car, aiding its performance in the corners. Porsche have taken the engineering to new levels of precision with the GT3 RS, even the crankshaft is made from a super-high purity steel called V361, which is re-melted in a vacuum multiple times to remove impurities, and something that they also use on their 919 LMP1 car.
So does it work? Of course it does, this is no-nonsense Porsche we’re talking about. The company themselves introduced the 991 GT3 RS by stating that it was a full 4 seconds quicker than the mid-engined V10 Carrera GT around the famous Nurburgring. All this engineering means that when it was launched the GT3 RS felt like no other 911 that had gone before it. The levels of grip and ability to carry speed through the corners is astonishing, in fact the ability of the driver is more likely to run out before the car itself lets go.
