One of the many reasons why the Porsche 911 is seen by most as the ideal performance car is that it is something that you can use every day. The perfect blend of high performance and finely tuned engineering with the added bonus that it can be used to nip to the shops or be just at home with the daily commute. Granted it’s not something that would be as luxurious with a 911 GT3 or even a GT3 RS, but they are track bred and a different breed, and although a little less comfortable, still entirely capable. No example of the Porsche 911’s all rounder status is better portrayed than with the Turbo S.
With 4 seats, 4 wheel drive, over 30mpg average fuel economy, luxurious leather interior, 18-way adaptive sports seats, park assist, cruise control, PCM satellite navigation and all the creature comforts you’d ever need, it appears that the Turbo S is more of a luxurious Grand tourer than supercar, or even sports car. However, under the bonnet (at the back of course) lies the engine that makes all that luxury motoring instantly forgettable once you fire it up. With a twin-turbocharged 3.8 litre 6-cylinder engine producing 580bhp combined with all-wheel drive and PDK dual-clutch transmission, the Turbo S is capable of firing from 0-62mph in just 2.9 seconds and onwards to a top speed of 205mph.
Porsche’s finest engineering knowhow comes alive at the press of your right foot and shows what this car can really do. Most cars with anywhere near this kind of power are either a handful to drive or create such a fuss when unleashing their performance. In the Turbo S the speed and handling are almost comically fast, yet the car always remains composed and civilised. This is partly thanks to the all-wheel drive and plethora of electronic aids, but also the sophisticated 4-wheel steering. At speeds below 18mph the rear wheels steer in the opposite direction to the front ones aiding agility and manoeuvrability, yet above 50mph they steer in the same direction for high speed stability.
