With a successful motorsport heritage or recent racing championship win the logical next step for many manufacturers is to signify that success by producing a road car as a special edition to celebrate that achievement. For some it emerges as a few stickers, a plaque perhaps or maybe a special colour or trim level unique to that model, for Mercedes Benz’ in-house performance specialists AMG, it means doing things their own way entirely.
In 2016, following a DTM Championship win the previous year, to signify the release of their new C63 DTM racing car, Mercedes Benz simultaneously released a road going version of their C63 AMG. Why celebrate your previous success when you can release a car based on one that hasn’t even turned a competitive wheel on track yet, AMG marketing at its very best. Released as a Mercedes Benz C63 S AMG ‘Edition 1 Motorsport’, the car stood out amongst the crazy world of the AMG performance range with several not so subtle additions.
With Designo Magno Selenite Grey satin finish paint as standard and offset stripes in AMG Racing Yellow, (offset to signify where the racing driver was positioned in the car, although strangely this wasn’t altered for right-hand-drive models), also along the sides of the car above the sill and on the gloss black mirrors, the car definitely looked the part mimicking its DTM racing sibling. To continue the racing look, the car also comes with the AMG Aerodynamic package in high gloss black which includes larger front splitter, AMG specific side skirts, rear diffuser with three vertical fins, larger AMG spoiler lip to the boot lid and rear bumper outlet trim. Completing the yellow accents are 19/20” twin spoke forged wheels in satin black with yellow rim and yellow contrasting stitching to the interior.
As with other AMG models, being aimed at performance doesn’t mean losing out on luxury, so being the top of the range ‘Edition 1’ the car also comes with Premium Package content as standard, meaning a sliding panoramic sunroof, LED intelligent headlights, keyless go comfort pack and Burmester surround sound system. It also comes with carbon ceramic brakes with bronze calipers, AMG Night pack, matt carbon fibre interior trim and yellow illuminated door entry guards, AMG performance seats with diamond stitching, switchable performance exhaust and Edition 1 badging to the AMG performance steering wheel.
Mercedes Benz are rightfully proud of their motorsport successes and seeing how much they put into their rare special road-going editions proves just that. The C63 S AMG is an exceptional car yet Mercedes have managed to make the Edition 1 Motorsport feel just that bit extra special, not just a publicity exercise to try and sell more cars off the back of their success on track. The extreme looks and abundance of ‘standard’ features ensure that the price increase is justified, whilst the rarity of the Motorsport edition means that you’ll rarely see another one.
For those who think the yellow stripes are just a bit too much, they also do an ‘Edition 1’ minus the ‘Motorsport’ graphics – with grey stripes instead of yellow.
Our 2017 Mercedes Benz C63 S AMG Edition 1 Motorsport is finished in the aforementioned Designo Selenite Magno Grey satin finish with full Diamond stitched Black Nappa leather interior with contrast yellow stitching. It comes with AMG forged alloy wheels in matt black and the carbon fibre exterior pack with the rear diffuser and upper splitter in carbon fibre, as well as the facelift Panamericana grille inspired by the AMG GT-R supercar.
