Car Of The Week – Ferrari 296 GTBElectricity is the future, supposedly. Whether it’s the end of the road for cars or not is another debate entirely, but it slowly seems to be happening, whether we like it or not, and there isn’t a much better way to embrace the future than by driving a Ferrari 296 GTB.
It’s a properly futuristic car, despite the fact it was first presented to the world in 2021, and was billed as a real Ferrari despite it only having six cylinders. It’s still at the cutting edge of technology four years later, however.
Year: 24/73
Mileage: 1200
Colour: Blu Abu Dhabi
Interior: Cuoio leather Interior
If you didn’t know, sitting snugly behind the driver is a V6 engine making 654bhp, which is topped up to 819bhp courtesy of the electric motor which sits between the engine and gearbox. This shoves the 296 GTB from 0-62mph in a brutally quick 2.9 seconds, thanks to the instant torque from the electric motor. The presence of which also means that in order to avoid annoying any neighbours, you can drive up to 15 miles on pure EV power too, for a discreet getaway, or to nip to the shops in style. It even has a brake by wire system, which means each wheel can break independently of the others. Which means if you brake whilst turning, the different load rates on each tyre can be accounted for, meaning the car can work at the maximum breaking potential at each wheel.
All of which is great, and makes the 296 GTB a truly fantastic, technological marvel of a car. But this is car of the week, not model of the week, which means it’s about only one 296 GTB- the one in the pictures. The first thing you notice is the paint. Applied in a special 2-layer finish, Ferrari call it Blu Abu Dhabi, and it’s thankfully well protected under head to toe, front to back bumper, in paint protection film (PPF). There’s a huge spec plaque in the frunk, all of which won’t be listed here, but rest assured there’s plenty of carbon fibre, from bits you can’t see like on the engine cover, to the steering wheel which has the LEDs on it to indicate when you should change up a gear. There’s no doubt this is a proper supercar, despite its shrunken engine and electric motor, it’s still a very capable machine.
