Car Of The Week – Ferrari 812 SuperfastGrand tourers are an underrated segment of cars. Supercars and hypercars are the ones that grab the headlines, while GT cars just get on with it. The key is that GTs are all about covering big distances quickly. Country-crushing miles obliterated with just a squeeze of the throttle. In the blink of an eye, the scenery changes. A roomy cabin, out of which you look out over the long, strident bonnet, underneath which lurks a thumping great V12. A proper, purposeful machine. A grand tourer.
A nice place to be is such a cliché, but it’s so true of the 812 Superfast’s interior. Especially this one (pictured here), which has a Cuoio (tan if you’re not fluent in Ferrari), leather interior. Along with plenty of carbon fibre covering the driving zone, centre console, rear side bumpers and even the treadplates.

Open the bonnet. The 6.5-litre V12 is an impressive lump and sits further back in the engine bay than you might expect. Perhaps its awesomeness is directly proportional to its size, in which case, it’s one mighty engine, producing 789bhp and 530 lb-ft of torque, which goes straight to the rear wheels, catapulting the car from 0-62mph in under 3.0 seconds. There’s a distinct lack of any kind of forced induction-turbo or otherwise, which is something of a rarity in this day and age and is something to be celebrated. It also means the sound the engine makes is something you need to hear to believe, especially higher up in the rev range.
To be a GT, the car has to be able to cover miles, and the front lift and top-to-bottom PPF make it genuinely usable so that when the speedbumps or potholes (in the UK) get bigger, you don’t have to fear for the front bumper’s well-being. Full electric seats might not catch your attention like all the carbon fibre parts listed on the spec plaque in the boot, but they should make the car more comfortable for longer journeys. Plus, when you arrive at your destination, you’ll have an easier job parking because of the surround view camera.
GT or supercar? perhaps this is a Ferrari that is a combination of both-with the engine providing all the drama and performance of a supercar, whilst the interior practicality and front-engined set-up giving the car a certain GT-ness about it.
