Car of the Week – Maserati Grancabrio TrofeoWinter isn’t coming anymore, which means two things: the Starks are less smug, but also that the season for top-down fun is approaching. And we can’t think of a better car for the money than the Maserati GranCabrio.
The truth is, you don’t have a whole host of options when it comes to high-end convertibles. It’s between either the GranCabrio or… nothing, really. The next best option in the same price range is probably the BMW M8 convertible, which unfortunately doesn’t quite have the badge to compete with the likes of the Maserati. The Porsche 911 cabriolet barely has any back seats in comparison, and the DB12 Volante is a considerable chunk of change more, along with the Rolls Royce-Dawn and Bentley continental GTC.

But filling a small niche isn’t the only thing the Maserati is good for. Admittedly, the exterior hasn’t changed dramatically for the new model, but like they say, if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it, and the GranCabrio is by no means a bad looking car. The interior however, is where Maserati have been hard at work. It’s worlds away from Maseratis of old, and doesn’t feel like things could fall apart at any given moment. It’s a change that’s been sorely needed from Maserati, and is one that brings the car bang up to date at the same time, with. Tech like wireless phone charging and two large screens that to be fair, are easy to navigate. The best part is, it still keeps that Italian charm, that German cars just… lack.
Maseratis of past have been about the engine. Often it’s been a thumping great V8. This time however, the GranCabrio has lost a couple of cylinders. The good news is, it’s still all about that engine. Under the bonnet is a 3.0-litre V6 ‘Nettuno’ engine which is lifted from a little car you might have heard of called the MC20. Truth be told, it sounds better in the GranCabrio than it does in the MC20 too. There’s air suspension too, and 18-way adjustable, heated and vented front seats with neck warmers. It rides so well, and the seats are plenty comfortable enough to make the GranCabrio a lovely place to spend time.
The GranCabrio sits in a strange place. Chances are, less people will buy a GranCabrio than a Continental GTC, and for the longest time, a Maserati was a car you could only buy with your heart. But now the tides are turning, and thanks to there actually being four proper seats and a usable boot, the GranCabrio is a Maserati you can start to buy with your head.
