Car Of The Week – McLaren 765LT

GT3 RS. Superleggera. Pista. Lots of manufacturers like to have a more extreme version of an already ludicrous car. So too naturally, does McLaren, in the LT series. LT stands for ‘long tail’, and in this case, the 765 LT is a lighter, harder, rawer version of the 720S, coming in at 80 kg less.

765 PS (754bhp) and 800 nm of torque are the headlines. So you don’t need to see the 0-62mph times to know that when you bury the throttle, the 765LT will be uncomfortably quick. The question is, what does the LT on the end of the car’s name actually mean? Well, the first ‘Longtail’ was the McLaren F1 GTR, nicknamed so for its distinctive stretched silhouette- designed so it reduced drag but also increased downforce. This ethos lives on in the rear wing of the 765 LT.

The car in the picture you saw when you first opened the email is number 623 of 765. It’s a proper poster car, in every way conceivable, which is what a supercar should be. The doors hinge up with proper drama. Aim carefully though, and you drop low into the snug racing seats (these are touring size but still fairly cosy), and it feels like your rear end is inches from the floor. It’s a proper cockpit built around the driver, and when the display in front of the driver rotates when you engage track mode, it might be a tad gimmicky but never fails to bring a touch of theatre. The same goes for the electrochromatic roof, which can turn opaque at the press of a button.

There’s one feature on this 765LT that is worth a mention and is genuinely useful. Sit in either seat and look over your shoulder between the two seats, and you’ll find a camera. Perhaps an unusual place to put a camera-wouldn’t it be much better placed outside the car? But it actually makes a lot of sense. See, it’s part of the McLaren track telemetry option, so you can watch back footage of yourself driving on track. How fit for purpose is that? Should you get tempted to spend some time at the track, there’s also full car PPF, providing crucial protection for that gorgeous MSO Bespoke Fistral Blue metallic paint.
