Car Of The Week – Mercedes Benz G63 AMG 4×4²Did you know the shortcut to type superscript is ‘alt + 0178’. And hey presto! ². This is such a niche piece of information that we didn’t know until this week and may never have needed to know until earlier this week at which point, a Mercedes-Benz G63 4×4 Squared (²), came into stock.
The significance of the superscript ² cannot be underestimated. Without it, you have a big, expensive, luxurious and noisy Mercedes-Benz. With it, the car swells in measures only proportionate to a blue whale. Or perhaps the Burj Khalifa.

Needless to say, it’s big. 910mm wading depth and 351mm of ground clearance tell you that much. Unless it’s a house, you’ll probably get over it. And the pictures don’t do it justice. Whatever you’re expecting, in person it looks bigger. 351mm higher off the ground than a regular G-Class, to be precise. More imposing. Getting in is like participating in a high jump competition, but once you’re in, it’s like nothing else on the road.
“The most G-Class ever” is the strapline from Mercedes-Benz. And to all intents and purposes, it appears to be true. The same luxurious, quality interior as we’ve come to expect from Mercedes is present, but it’s the outside of the car where the changes are. Permanent all-wheel drive, independent suspension and specially built portal axles for simply extortionate ground clearance. It’s the most capable off-road the G-Wagen has ever been, and its on-road presence, which is already mighty, is formidable. There’s extensive exterior carbon, from the wheel arches, to the spare wheel cover, along with an optional roof rack and Night Package, all of which ensure this car catches your eye like nothing else on the road.
The question to ask yourself: is bigger, better?
