Car Of The Week – Mercedes Benz G63 AMG Magno Edition

Gelandewagen, or G-wagen. A car that, from the outside at least, has seemingly escaped the wrath of time. Its retro good looks have build a solid customer base, along with their reputation for solid build quality and an uncompromising off-road ability, all the while retaining the luxury you would expect of a top spec Mercedes.

The latest iteration of G-wagen remains largely the same at a first glance. Some things have remained, like the body-on frame approach it’s always had, rooting the car firmly to its past. The doors still require a hefty slam, and like always, there’s a loud mechanical clunk as a reward.

Outside the car, there are minor adjustments here and there- such as a new lip to the A-pillar to aid drag coefficient. A first for the G63 is that the exhaust tips can be made Black, to match the AMG Night Package 1 & 2. Packages that are optional everywhere but the Magno Edition. Going between the outside and the interior of the car has never been easier either, with keyless entry featuring as standard, meaning the key doesn’t even have to leave your pocket to get in.

Some of the bigger changes are inside the car, starting with the unmissable updated dual 12.3” infotainment display, which is now a touchscreen for the first time. There’s also a fully electric G-wagon in the range that didn’t exist before, and the G63 AMG even has a new (but very small), mild hybrid system that produces 21bhp and 184lb ft of torque. Panic not – you’ll be glad to know the car retains its fire-breathing V8-something not many cars manage to do these days. The two motors combined produce a gargantuan 603 bhp and 627 lb ft.

The G63 is an impressive beast of a car, and the Magno Edition is the very pinnacle of the range, as is reflected in the satin paint finish. It feels quite rare that a model last as long as the G63 has, and it’s an impressive line that Mercedes continue to tread-updating the car slightly every year so it doesn’t fall behind, but still harking back to the original Steyr-Daimler-Puch military vehicle in 1979.
