Fabulously Fantastic F1 Edition
Although there are many special editions of cars, many are merely a marketing exercise and only a few are a genuine reason to celebrate. However in Aston Martin’s case their special edition Vantage was just that. After returning to Formula 1 for the first time in over 50 years and in the process managing to secure a spot as the official F1 pace car, releasing a Vantage F1 Edition of that very pace car was a great way to mark the occasion.
Using performance and handling gains developed for the F1 pace car, the Vantage F1 Edition is a more track focused and sharper version of the standard car. With a 25bhp increase in power, the AMG sourced 4.0 V8 engine isn’t dramatically different from before, but then again it didn’t need to be. With a satisfying burble on tick over and the trademark AMG roar under acceleration, the Vantage is always a characterful car to drive.
It is the suspension and aerodynamics that have seen the biggest changes. Thanks to a new front splitter, canard flicks and a large rear diffuser the downforce has been increased by almost 200kg. Handy if you have a gaggle of Formula 1 cars in your wing mirrors chasing you round a track. With new dampers and anti-roll bars the ride also now manages to be more focussed yet still as comfortable as an Aston Martin should be. While not a dramatic difference over the standard car, the differences make the Vantage a much more impressive sports car.
