CAR OF THE WEEK – OUR BENTLEY CONTINENTAL GT V8ELEGANCE CRAFTSMANSHIP POWER
With the announcement last month that Bentley Motors is due to suspend production of its highly-regarded W12 powertrain in April 2024, there is arguably no better time to revel in the majesty of Bentley’s fire-breathing offerings before they become resigned to the history books.
Planning to offer every model with a hybrid option next year and with intentions to electrify the entire range before the end of the decade, it is important that we celebrate the marque’s mighty internal-combustion engines whilst we still can.
Although the V8 variant of the Continental GT has not had as much attention as its W12 sibling, for those that truly enjoy driving, wanting to scythe along a mountain road on the odd occasion, the V8 is the one to go for. Powered by a four-litre twin-turbocharged V8 producing 542bhp, accelerating from 0-60mph in 3.9 seconds, and with a range of 470 miles, it is perfectly positioned for both long distance road trips and spontaneous Sunday morning blasts.
And you don’t miss out in the luxury-department either by opting for the V8 – our example is offered with a whole host of optional features that provide both sportiness and comfort in equal measure. The Mulliner Driving Specification is a must have. Consisting of a smattering of exterior and interior details, including: 22’’ gloss black alloy wheels, diamond quilted interior stitching, embroidered Bentley emblems, and a metal fuel filler cap, amongst others, it makes the Continental truly special.
Additionally, the Carbon Fibre Styling Specification, Touring Specification, Mood Lighting Specification, Front Seat Comfort Specification, and Blackline Specification come together to position our Continental at the top of the British luxury grand-touring tree.
And the Bentley Rotating Display – a vital addition to our example, comprises three fascia choices: a latest generation infotainment system, three beautiful dials, and a smooth finish to the dash fascia, allowing the user to switch between them depending on what mood they’re in. An inductive phone charger, bespoke Naim audio system, panoramic glass roof, LED welcome lamps, and a soft-touch Bentley car cover complete the extensive specification of our example.
Park your Continental next to any of its modern-day contemporaries, or, for that matter, its predecessors, and its superformed-aluminium architecture will definitely catch your attention. The Extreme Silver metallic (Extended Range) of our example suits the design perfectly – accentuating its sharp shoulder lines and extreme curves, it makes the GT look like it is crafted from a solid block of metal.
Such a complex, time-consuming manufacturing process is indicative of the quality Bentley wish to instil into their models. They have succeeded in creating an automobile which is refined, soulful, and gloriously upholstered. But whilst the Bentley’s of the future are bound to utilise these techniques, if you’re swayed by an engine above all else, you’ll want to sample a majestic V8 before it’s too late…
