CAR OF THE WEEK – OUR BMW M3 COMPETITION TOURINGMAGICAL M3 TOURING
It’s the car BMW ‘M’ aficionados have been waiting years for – an estate version of the superb M3. You’d have to go all the way back to 2010 to witness the last great BMW ‘M’ estate car in the form of the outlandish V10 M5 Touring; a performance family wagon that even in 2023 would give many a thoroughbred supercar a serious run for its money. But, in many ways, the all-new M3 Touring is its modern-day reincarnation – a thrilling, finely-tuned family express that just so happens to lap the Nordschlife in 7 minutes 35 seconds…
Unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last year for its dynamic debut, the ‘Touring’ version of the M3 utilises the same twin-turbocharged 3.0 in-line-six as its saloon sibling. Delivering 510hp, 650Nm torque, and accelerating from 0-62mph in 3.6 seconds, the powerful unit is also behind the BMW M4 GT3 endurance racing car, so you know you’re buying something with real engineering and racing pedigree. Facilitating the M3’s supreme athleticism, an eight speed automatic steptronic transmission alongside an advanced xDrive all-wheel drive system ensures that you can drive your Touring like you would a 911; with excellent traction, agility, and playfulness.
But unlike other all-wheel-drive systems, the brilliance of the system used in the M3 Touring is that it can change between ‘4WD, 4WD Sport, and 2WD’ at the flick of a switch. Put simply, the Active M Differential comprises of a technical masterpiece of variable torque distribution between all 4 wheels depending on your mood and driving conditions. Primarily rear-biased but transferring power to the front when necessary, the technology gives you a sense of confidence behind the wheel.
Take a step inside and you’re greeted by the all-new ‘BMW Curved Display’, providing a seamless infotainment system where you can change all of the vehicle’s many settings and adapt the vehicle’s driving dynamics to suit your preferences. Interior choices are endless, but our example’s gorgeous Silverstone and Black BiColour extended Merino leather interior is both elegant and refined. You can configure even brighter contrasting combinations if you’d like, but our example fits in perfectly with the M3 Touring’s inconspicuous, yet aggressive identity. With smatterings of carbon fibre amongst flashes of vibrant red controls, the interior environment is comfortable but focused, befitting of such a dynamically focused model.
Our eye-catching example comes with a set of must-have options: the visibility pack, comfort pack, M brakes with red calipers, an extended leather interior, and an irresistible Dravit Grey metallic paint make the M3 Touring utterly compelling. Mixing performance, comfort, understated elegance, and crisp aerodynamic design together in a totally usable, practical package, BMW have undoubtedly crafted the ultimate fast estate.
