CAR OF THE WEEK – OUR PORSCHE BOXSTER SPYDER (981)

ALONG CAME A SPYDER

The Spyder, Porsche’s most extreme variant of the much loved 981 Boxster generation. 30kg lighter and 11mm lower than the GTS with its aggressive front end styling and distinctive humps behind the rollover bars harking back to the Spyder of the 1960’s.

The 3.8 litre engine produces a healthy 370bhp and unlike the previous 987 generation can only be mated to a 6 speed manual gearbox which is nothing short of a masterpiece. Fitted with the figure hugging 918 Carbon Fibre bucket seats keeping you secured in place there is nothing else quite like it for attacking the tight and twisty B roads that the car was built to tackle.

For owners though, the most important upgrade from the 987 is the convertible roof, Comically difficult to use on the previous gen car they have redesigned the workings to not only save 10kg’s but make it far easier to erect and stow if you get caught short in the British weather.

To drive, the car is direct and beautifully balanced as we’ve come to expect with modern day Porsche’s and the 45bhp increase over the Boxster GTS comes as a welcome addition when the engine gets into it’s stride. Removing the fabric roof and hearing the flat 6 sing from the switchable sports exhaust, you quickly come to the realisation there isn’t any other car you’d rather be in. The 981 Boxster Spyder is the essence of what a sports car should be.
