CAR OF THE WEEK – OUR RANGE ROVER SV P530

CONTEMPORARY LUXURY PERSONIFIED

There’s no denying that the all-new Range Rover is a triumph of design, engineering, and British craftsmanship. With simplicity and reductionism in mind, the boffins at Land Rover wanted to move away from the slightly fussy, old-fashioned look of the outgoing model by focusing on delivering a more streamlined architecture. The biggest changes are at the rear; clunky rear taillights have been relegated in favour of two thin black strips that blend seamlessly into the boot-lid, resulting in a smooth, aerodynamic profile.

The result is an SUV which is truly modern and contemporary. Land Rover could have very easily slipped into a nostalgic, kitsch-like approach to design, rehashing cars from their past and merely imitating what has come before. But with this new model they have thought outside the box, creating an exquisite SUV that doesn’t feel garish or extreme, but restrained and tasteful.

Building on this high degree of creative, imaginative artistry, the SV P530 brings an added layer of flair and exclusivity to the Range Rover catalogue. Sitting at the top of the tree, the SV P530 consists of a collection of exterior and interior enhancements aimed at producing greater levels of personality, expression, and beautiful detailing to what is an already incredibly luxurious package.

Our example is fitted with the understated ‘SV Intrepid Exterior’ accent theme, adding Graphite Atlas and Anthracite detailing to the front and lower grilles, side blades, and tailgate finisher. Emanating a soft, mellow, gold-like hue when caught in the light, the Anthracite finisher is rich yet subtle, perfectly capturing the SV’s character. If you’d like a bolder look, opting for the ‘Serenity Exterior’ gives you Corinthian Bronze and Satin Silver accents, generating a brighter, flashier aesthetic.

Dive into the interior and you’re greeted by swathes of wood, leather, and metal – surely the three staple materials that any serious luxury car should have? The front seats boast 24-way heated, ventilated, and hot stone massage functionality, allowing you to warm up or cool down depending on whether you’ve ventured deep into the wintry Scottish-highlands or are exploring the baking-hot Moroccan desert.

And if you’re an audiophile the SV has you covered. A 1600W Meridian Hi-Fi system delivers crystal clear, high fidelity sound, making you feel as though you’re sat in a recording studio. But if you just want to chill out in silence you can do that too – noise cancelling technology built into the speakers and winged headrests allow you to totally separate yourself from the outside world.

Venture into the rear and that’s when things really start to get exciting. With Executive Class Comfort Plus rear seats as standard, the back of the SV P530 is the place to be if you want to arrive at your business meeting revitalised and rejuvenated. With the same heated, cooled, and massage tech as the front, as well as reclining seats with a heated heel catcher and calf rests, you can be certain of a comfortable journey.

Controversially, white ceramic controls replace the usual rubber or piano black, and while they represent a departure for Land Rover, they bring a likeable crispness to the interior. This mighty British marque is not afraid of experimenting with different materials, and they’re absolutely right to do so. Innovation and evolution, my dears.

The SV P530 may appear a bit of a dinosaur to some. Smaller capacity powertrains and hybrid engines are the fashionable choice – the V8 is undoubtedly on the way out. But if you’re a Range Rover devotee and nothing but the best will do, the SV P530 is sure to give you an unforgettable experience whether you’re driving or napping in the back.
