Used BMW M8 for sale
The range-topper in BMW’s sports car line-up. The 8 Series was first produced in 1990 until production stopped in 1999. BMW breathed life back into the 8 Series in 2018, however. Best described as a grand tourer rather than an out-and-out sports car, the BMW 8 series aims to mix luxury grand touring with BMW’s typical engaging driving experience.
What the 8 Series has to offer
The BMW 8 Series comes in three different guises to suit a wide variety of needs- Coupe (G15), Convertible (G14), and Gran Coupe (G16). At the top of the range sits the M8 Competition, which tries to take the M8 ethos to the next level and is powered by a twin-turbocharged, 4.4l petrol V8, making the car an excellent grand tourer. However, the 8 Series faces stiff competition in the form of Aston Martin. The 8 Series is extremely capable, however, superbly fast, and surprisingly comfortable. The Gran Coupe model means it’s more feasible to fit four people in as well, although the low roofline could rob you of headroom if you’re sat in the back seats.
Interior and tech
The dashboard is built around the central infotainment screen and cockpit digital dashboard. Facing them, you’ll find two comfortable, leather-swathed seats. Tech includes a standard fit head-up display that projects critical information onto the windscreen. Tech-wise, the 8 Series comes with everything you could need. The only thing to note is that models before 2020 did not come with Android Auto, so beware. The interior is otherwise solid, as we expect from BMW, and features plenty of quality materials that you’d expect in a Grand Tourer. The Gran Coupe has much more useable back seats than the Coupe or Convertible and four doors to boot, so bear that in mind when deciding which suits you best.
What are the running costs?
Fuel consumption isn’t excessive, but running costs will still be high, and the 8 Series takes a big hit from depreciation. Running costs vary from model to model and depend on the engine choice. The M850i, for example, returns 26.4mpg if you have a gentle right foot, whereas diesel models like the 840d can claim higher figures, up to 44.1mpg. BMW 8 Series isn’t known for being unreliable, and the car should serve you well, especially if the service schedule is adhered to. If problems do occur, repairs can be costly, however.
