Ford History & Motorsport

Ford has one of the most significant accolades possible in the motoring industry. Henry Ford brought motoring to the masses when the now-famous Ford Model T production started in 1908. Ford has enjoyed an onslaught of motorsport triumphs over the years. Most notably, as is documented in the 2109 film Ford Vs Ferrari, starring Christian Bale as driver Ken Miles and Matt Damon as Carroll Shelby, Ford demolished Ferrari at Le Mans in 1966, showing the world what they were capable of. However, the show’s true star is the GT40 that Ford builds to beat Ferrari, a mere 40” from the floor (hence the moniker GT40). Ford has long since enjoyed a connection with Shelby Racing, and to this day, some of Ford’s fastest and most powerful cars come with the iconic cobra badge adorning the vehicle. Ford has also had considerable success in Formula One, with 10 drivers’ championships and 13 constructors between the years of 1967 and 2004. However, Ford is set to return as an engine provider for Oracle Red Bull Racing in 2026. So, watch this space.

Ford Engines & Performance

Speaking of F1, Ford’s entry into the sport in 1967 gave us the iconic DFV (Double Four Valve) engine built in partnership with British engine specialist Cosworth. Built as a 3.0 litre V8 engine, over the engine’s lifespan, it gave Ford 155 Grand Prix wins between 1967 and 1985. It remains the most successful engine ever and was used by over 55 teams. That’s just the beginning of the famous Ford engines that were breathed on by Cosworth. Similar engines can be found in the 1963 Ford Cortina Lotus, in the form of its 1,557cc straight-four engine, and in the 1985 Ford Sierra RS Cosworth- a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine.
